Technically, you don’t need to make cloudflare your registrar, but it’s much cleaner. You will need to make cloudflare authoritative for your zone. Depending on your registrar, you may or may not be able to delegate a subdomain or you might need to switch your NS records for your entire domain to cloudflare. Either way, transferring the domain and making cloudflare your registrar simplifies things. Good luck!!
